United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the release of the 2011 Annual Report for the District of South Dakota. The report highlights the efforts of the US Attorney’s Office District of South Dakota for calendar year 2011.
The US Attorney’s office has seen an increase of over 20% in the number of new criminal cases filed, with 691 filed in 2011 compared to 555 in 2010. Additionally, there was over a 13% increase in the number of defendants prosecuted, with 759 in 2011 compared to 655 in 2010.
“I’m encouraged that our efforts are showing positive results,” said Johnson. “These increased numbers demonstrate a commitment by a staff of dedicated professionals who deliver justice and prosecute some of our state’s most dangerous and violent criminals. But we can’t do this work alone, and we owe a debt of gratitude to our law enforcement partners at every level of government,” added Johnson.
The report also highlights the enhanced community outreach efforts, a strengthened commitment to public safety in Indian country, and progress in the areas of victim’s rights and advocacy. Also included is a description of the work performed by Civil and Appellate Divisions.
